向导通常是玩家遇到的第一个NPC。 创建世界后，他在玩家附近生成。 他提供了主要针对新玩家的技巧，並提示了展示給他的物品所使用的所有制作配方（包括所需的[[工作台）。

不同于绝大多数其他 NPC，向导于世界创建时即生成，在有可用的房屋之前。不过他还是会搬进第一座建好的房屋。如果他被杀掉，就需要先建好合适的房屋之后他才会重生。

• In the Nintendo 3DS version, the Guide will still say tips that he would normally say in a Corruption world if you are in a Crimson world.

• Killing the Guide in the Underworld via use of a Guide Voodoo Doll, or (on  Desktop,  Console,  Mobile, and  Switch) allowing the Guide to die in the Underworld while he is in contact with 熔岩, will summon the Wall of Flesh.
  • The Guide must be alive to summon the Wall of Flesh, otherwise the Wall of Flesh will not spawn.
• Unless on the  Desktop version,  Console version,  Mobile version, and  Nintendo Switch version, the Guide will not have many useful tips after unlocking Hardmode, except hinting about destroying Altars and finding Souls of Light and Night underground.
  • On  Desktop,  Console,  Mobile, and  Switch, the Guide was updated to include advice about many post-Hardmode events and NPCs.
• The Guide is replaced by various NPCs in secret world seeds:
  • The Demolitionist will be the starting NPC in the secret seed "For The Worthy".
  • The Party Girl will be the starting NPC in the secret seeds "5162020" and "05162020", affectionately referred to as "Drunk World".
  • The Merchant will be the starting NPC in the secret seeds "not the bees" and "not the bees!".
• For those who regularly use this wiki, it is easy to dismiss the Guide as useless (except for his role in summoning the Wall of Flesh) -- more so since he's not even a vendor. It's worth remembering that for those who don't use this wiki to look up crafting recipes and game progression, the Guide lives up to his name, as a primary source of in-game hints and information.

• The guide says that he shares much in common with the Zoologist and the Clothier. This may be referring to the fact that they are all cursed with some sort of transformation that is out of their control.
• According to the Voodoo Demon's Bestiary entry, the Guide is said to be the "Chosen One". This may refer to how he is associated with/is the Wall of Flesh.
