爆破專家是個商販 NPC，一旦以下條件全部滿足就會出現：

有一間空房屋。
玩家的物品欄中有爆炸物。
存在商人。

如果爆破專家被殺，他只會在以上條件再次滿足時才會重生。這意味着爆炸物必須再次放入玩家的物品欄中。將爆炸物存放在寶箱或其他容器中也會滿足要求。

在 Desktop version, Console version, Mobile version, Nintendo Switch version, and tModLoader version中，爆破專家會向附近的敵怪扔手榴彈來自衛，這在遊戲開始時會造成 20 / 30 / 35 傷害。

此外，在 Desktop version, Console version, Mobile version, Nintendo Switch version, and tModLoader version中，包括爆破專家在內的各個 NPC 會隨着玩家的進展得到各種屬性提升。

在秘密種子「For the worthy」中爆破專家會取代嚮導作為開局 NPC。
爆破專家的武器——手榴彈——驚人地強大，尤其考慮到在遊戲中他能那麼早期就出現。因此，在血月期間他會是一大助力。

爆破專家的外形似乎是基於很多遊戲、電影、文學作品中的矮人（dwarf）的。他明顯比其他 NPC 要矮，並且有大鬍子。此外，他的挖礦頭盔、燈籠、和他出售爆炸物的事實都符合矮人喜愛地下環境的說法。他的派對專屬話語、下雨時的話語之一、在洞穴中的快樂度話語、和其怪物圖鑑條目都進一步證明了這一點。他的多個名字也引用了小說中的矮人角色：
- Beldin 來自五卷本奇幻史詩《聖石傳奇（The Belgariad）》。
- Durim 是腐化的 Durin，這是英國作家 J.R.R 托爾金（J.R.R. Tolkien）的書里提到的一個矮人國王。
- Fikod 和 Urist 都是獨立電子遊戲《Dwarf Fortress》中的通用矮人名字。

他在一句話語中將 ebonstone（黑檀石）叫做「ebonrock（黑檀岩）」。
